RE: Statewide Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Tax at 3-Cents Per Gallon

DISCUSSION:
Streets and roads across Alabama are in awful shape. Without available financial resources,
County Commissions and Engineers have struggled just to make minimal repairs. Talladega
County is no different. Unable to make necessary long-term improvements to County roads,
county crews work diligently with what they have. Frustrated Commissioners and County
Engineers find themselves explaining the County’s limitations daily. The current situation is bad
for the driving public and bad for our economy.
In an effort to help Counties (and Cities) get the financial resources to improve their roads, the
Association of County Commissions of Alabama (ACCA) recently proposed a statewide three-cent
gas tax. The ACCA would issue bonds and distribute proceeds among the counties with Talladega
County’s share being approximately $19 million. The three-cent tax collected will be used to
repay the bonds.
It is estimated that a three-cent bond issue would cost the average Talladega County driver less
than $2.00 per month, but would produce a county economic impact of over $19 million for local
road and bridge improvements.
This effort, however, must have your support. If you are one of the many who want to see
improvements to the roads in our County, please call, write, fax, or email your State Senator or
Representative immediately!
